Conditional Statements

We are learning to
identify and compose "conditional statements"
represent conditional statements using branching diagrams
use a visual programming language to solve simple problems involving branching and user input
What are conditional statements?
You are probably very familiar with conditional statements, but you might not call them by that name...
Parents and teachers use conditional statements all the time.
They often follow a pattern.
IF you finish your homework, THEN you can play on the iPad.
IF it is raining, THEN take an umbrella.
IF it is cold, THEN wear a jumper.
Your turn!
Complete these statements using the IF-THEN pattern:
IF you go outside to play…
IF it is Saturday…
IF the TV is too loud…
IF you drink the last bit of milk…
IF you can’t see the board…
IF you see rubbish lying on the ground…
Use the pictures to help you to create more conditional statements. Can you think of more than one IF-THEN statement for a single picture?
The IF-THEN Game
One person acts as the
Programmer
and the other players are the
Computers
.
IF I spin around, THEN you spin around.
IF I put my heads on my head, THEN you sit down.
IF I clap my hands, THEN you stand up.
IF I say "potato", THEN you curl up.
IF I say "string bean", THEN you stand with your arms by your sides.
IF I say "popcorn", THEN you jump.
IF I raise my right arm, THEN you raise your right leg, ELSE, you raise your left arm.
IF I raise my right arm, THEN you raise your right leg, ELSE
IF I raise my left arm, THEN you raise your left leg, ELSE you raise both your arms.
What do you know about conditional statements?
Save the if-then-else image to use as a cover image
Take a screenshot of the code in Tynker where you have used IF-THEN blocks.
Create a "Shadow Puppet" with two images
With the first image, introduce yourself and give an example of a conditional statement that someone might use in everyday life.
With the second image, explain what this piece of code means, especially how the IF-THEN blocks work.
Save and upload to Snapshot.
Assessment Criteria
Work that is below the standard:
is incomplete
does not give an effective example of a conditional statement
shows a simple puzzle not involving conditional statements
Work that is at the standard:
includes a simple modelled example of a conditional statement
explains in simple terms how the IF-THEN block is used.
Includes a simple puzzle (Level 9 or 10)
Work that is above the standard:
includes an interesting or innovative example of a conditional statement
clearly explains how the IF-THEN-ELSE block is used to solve the puzzle
Includes a complex puzzle (Level 11 to 23)
